IOS 16 reportedly giving iMessage new ‘social network-like’ features including audio message updates

According to Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman’s Power On email this week, Apple is said to be aiming to update Messaging with new “social network-like” capabilities for iOS 16 with a special emphasis on audio messages.

Gurman comments, “I’d anticipate more social network-like capabilities in Communications, especially around audio messages.” According on what I’ve been informed, the Sydney software update is a substantial improvement. It will have a tonne of operating system upgrades, like as notifications, iPad multitasking, and the Messages and Health applications. The lock screen, which is sometimes an afterthought in interface design, is also included in the revamp.

A week from now, on Monday at WWDC, Apple will reveal iOS 16. A new multitasking interface is rumoured to be added to iPadOS 16 and “major upgrades to activity and health tracking” are rumoured to be added to watchOS 9. Previous reports have suggested that iOS 16 will include improvements to notifications and new health-tracking upgrades, but no major system redesign is likely.

I’ve previously discussed how Apple’s iMessage’s audio messaging functionality falls short of that of rival services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Gurman doesn’t go into detail about any of the rumoured upcoming “social network-like” features for iMessage, but my wish list for audio message enhancements includes a clear, noticeable lock icon for hands-free audio message recording, background listening, allowing for messages to continue to play when leaving the Messages app or the conversation thread, and the option to speed up voice messages by changing the playback speed to 1.5X, 2X, etc. Gurman doesn’t go into detail about any of the.
